There’s no stopping me from continuing to share my story and mission. And until I can’t any longer I will keep on going. I am not upset with what may be for me. Justin and I discuss it, death. When it becomes real like this of course it brings up a lot of things. One day I won’t be here. Not that I’m going anywhere so soon—but that’s the reality. And I don’t like it. But I’m okay with it. When I discuss my disease with people you get so many different reactions and opinions. There can be a lot of negative energy about having brain cancer, or cancer in general. When it goes there I just tell people I refuse to hear the negative or be angry or resentful. Why not positivity? It’s so much easier to be positive. I don’t blame people for their reactions—fear and not knowing what to say to someone as sick as I am is complicated. I hope that I am showing people a new face of cancer. A face of happiness, even with brain cancer, and how to live your life as full as it can be. And we’ll see and who knows? Maybe I’ll be a miracle. The miracle that someone was looking for, that they didn’t think could happen. I’m going to beat it in my own way, and live a little bit longer than you would expect me to. I know I’m going to do it. I feel it now, I feel like all these little things that are happening with me and my mission are keeping me alive. My healing journey is everything that I put out there for others that brings so much inspiration back to me. I hope that my message and purpose will help so many people—that would be everything to me.
If you’ve yet to witness Taylor Swift’s music video for “Bejeweled,” you’re missing out: The pop superstar delivers a fashion fantasy filled with glimmering, glamorous looks. Her new style era for Midnights has been all about embracing such a glitzy aesthetic—her crystal Oscar de la Renta dress at this year’s VMAs being a prime example—and Swift only continued this disco ball energy with her striking look at the MTV EMAs in Duesseldorf, Germany tonight (the European version of the music awards ceremony). As someone who’s nominated for six awards this evening—including best artist—you didn’t expect her not to bust out a statement look, did you? Swift’s latest blingy look is courtesy of London designer David Koma: She wore his sleek black bodysuit with a bold caged skirt, which was punctuated with tons of emerald gems. (His fall 2022 collection included more of these jewel-style pieces.) By quite literally dripping in gems, it was an obvious nod to her hit “Bejeweled.” You could say she dressed like a real winner of the night, even before collecting any awards. The look alone demands an acceptance speech.
Kolasa, in East Hampton.Photo: Lincoln PilcherGratitude is such an important word for me. I am so grateful to be sitting here talking to you about this today. To share my purpose and mission to beat rare cancers. With whatever shall be the rest of my life and for as long as I can do it I want to raise a lot of money to fund new trials and research. It’s now my calling—to stay kind through it all and to help others. So many other cancers get a lot of attention, and rightfully so, but the fact is that rare cancers make up half of all cancer diagnoses and there’s not a lot—and nowhere near enough—funding or research. Take Glioblastoma, which is the type of brain cancer I have. I’d never heard of it before. Most of our friends and family have never heard of it before. But now that I’m talking about it, so many people have come to us and have said my friend’s sister or brother has it or I know this person who has it. It’s creating awareness, a dialogue. I’m one of 13,000 people globally who have been diagnosed with GBM. It’s 13,000 people diagnosed per year. It’s really rare, and the worst kind of brain cancer to have. I have to turn this journey into a platform to bring awareness and, hopefully, to fund research and trials for cures.
